If you think you’re a global leader in eCommerce & you’re not In China (or planning to be there), you’re not a global leader.
George Gallate, President APAC, Global CMO at Merkle didn’t mince words at GELF LA ’16. He bought experience, enthusiasm and tons of data to the stage. Anyone trying to slip in a nap after lunch failed miserably!
The ecommerce opportunity in China is HUGE – an observation with which no one at GELF LA disagreed. Gallate pointed out that Singles Day dwarfs CyberMonday spending, as the slide below summarizes. And last year, cross-border ecommerce was HUGE! And so was mobile ….
By 2020, China will become the largest cross-border B2C market in the world. The transaction volume of good imported into China will reach $245 billion. Yup, you guessed it. HUGE opportunities await brands and retailers based outside China.
More ecommerce means lots more shipping. As illustrated below, shipping grew ten times between 2006 and 2014.
The growth of ecommerce shows no signs of slowing down as the middle classes quite literally come online all around China. George’s presentation includes some detailed stats on the different segments of online in China; data everyone should embed in their strategic planning.
